Secrets of Diana's Butler

He called himself Princess Diana's confidant, the keeper of all her secrets.

The minute he took his oath at the inquest into the deaths of Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed, Burrell became the closest star-witness.

Like in any soap-opera, this episode ended on a cliffhanger. Michael Mansfield, lawyer for Dodi's father, Mohamed Al Fayed, asked Burrell to repeat for the court what he had heard. In an attempt to show that Burrell knew something significant about Dodi and Diana, Mansfield read out the last-page from his-book. It quotes a letter Diana had written.

In it, she refers to "the coming weekend" being an important one.

Then she goes on to say, "I wanted to write on paper how enormously touched I am that you share this excitement with me as well."

Mansfield's goal was to counter Burrell's earlier claims that nobody had a problem with Diana dating Dodi and Khan, both Muslims.

The ITV 'bongs'

The return of ITV's News at Ten - complete with Sir Trevor McDonald and those infamous "bongs" - is bound to result in a stand-off with the BBC One news team.

Britain's best-known news bulletin was laid to rest with full battle honours on 4 March, 1999, After more than 30 years.

What ITV hadn't foreseen was that the BBC, would move its nine o'clock bulletin to occupy its old slot. ITV's news-audience had dropped by 14 per cent in a year and the regulator said ITV was failing to meet its public service commitments.

The fact that ITV is now-bringing the bulletin back as the centrepiece of a restructured schedule - says a great deal about how TV news-coverage has changed.

Bank-charges on trial

Banks customers are awaiting the start of a High Court test-case which could bring a fundamental change to UK High Street banking.

The outcome may decide how much banks can charge millions of account-holders who go overdrawn without permission.

Several hundred thousand bank customers are estimated to have won more than half a billion pounds in refunds from their banks in 2007 after accusing them, often in local court proceedings, of imposing excessive overdraft-fees.

We simultaneously received news that our coalition-partners dropped-bombs on suspected Al-Qaeda targets, while Mr Blair took up a part-time job with JPMorgan.

Is this the pay-off for being Bush's marketing man for the Iraq war and putting our armed forces at his disposal.

Life is going to be much more fun now, especially compared with what it would have been if he had refused to go to war with Bush. He might have spent his time setting up an efficient public transport system, building green energy capacity.
